It's bad enough that rats are far more likely to be your enemies than your allies in games, but I can think of quite a few in which they're basically part of the background, not likely to gain your notice unless you accidentally step on and kill them. Was that supposed to be funny? Gratuitously gritty? Both? Anyway, the examples that come to mind are from the late '90s and early 2000s, so maybe the fad faded away.
