If I ever write a non-facetious high fantasy, it will not involve traditional enchanted brooms, wands, or staves. Even with magic, how could you hope to do a wide variety of things at will with a simple, often unwhittled stick?

Granted, when a smartphone isn't in use, it doesn't look like it could do much.

Even when it is in use, a smartphone doesn’t really look like much. You still have to know which buttons to push.
