I used to tell myself that I didn't really try to make my characters cute; I just drew mildly anthropomorphic cartoon animals as I knew how and gave them not-too-annoying personalities. But by this strip, I became aware that for the last however many months, I'd made Aspen's irises bigger for no other reason than to enhance the Bambi effect (or chibi effect if you prefer).
