I was not aware of Mary Norton's Borrowers books until the '97 screen adaptation, which was pretty bad but still piqued my curiosity. If you don't feel like reading any of them, try watching The Secret World of Arrietty. For now, all you need to know is that they're tiny, secretive humans who make do by taking small items from regular-size humans. Their name is a stretch, because they don't return everything they take.
