The last panel might feel a little too soon, but I thought it important to establish that "Downscale," while containing at least one punchline per update, has a fairly poignant side. This was also my first major experiment with background colors that reflect emotions rather than literal scenery. And AFAIK, it was the first episode to appeal strongly to someone I'd never met.
