In some cartoon-loving circles, "anthro" is short for "anthropomorphic animal." It carries a bit more clarity than "furry," which tends to refer not to the characters but to the fans -- sometimes exclusively the perverse ones. Besides, it makes more sense for animals themselves to think in terms of "anthro," at least when in a human-dominated world.
