I've always had a deep interest in dreams, be they weird or realistic, happy or horrifying. The great thing about putting dreams in fiction (which I did for my NaNoWriMo novel as well) is that just about anything goes. If you don't take the purposefully rigid approach of "The Dreamland Chronicles," you can afford to have exceedingly little artistic consistency, which was never my strong suit in the first place. Of course, it can be a very cheap device, so I wouldn't use it all the time, but it makes for a nice vacation.

However, I wouldn't say that the dream miniseries is a "just-for-fun" detour from the main comic story. It serves to inform or at least remind us of the characters' fears, desires, and perceptions. There's a reason that Kody looks chubbier and hairier than usual: Aspen's subconscious produces caricatures based on the traits that stand out to a snake like her. The flotation and fast-lane developments need no explanation.
